County Council Sends Partial Smoking Ban To Nov. 3 Ballot

08/28/2009 - The St. Louis County Council, by a vote of 4-3, passed a bill Tuesday night that would limit indoor smoking in St. Louis County. The measure will appear on the Nov. 3 ballot.

The bill exempts casino floors, smoking lounges currently in place at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, and drinking establishments where alcohol sales account for 75 percent or more of sales.

Introduced by County Council Member Barbara Fraser, D-University City, the measure is opposed by many who were initial supporters. Smoking ban proponents are not happy with many of the concessions that were added to the bill.

County Executive Charlie Dooley, who favors a state-wide ban, has not commented on whether he plans to veto the measure.
